Wrapping rigid conduit in 10 Mil tape?

I have a sitiuation where some 1/2" rigid conduit was installed on a wood fence. Well that wood fence has been replaced with a new cyclone fence. I have to re-route the 1/2" rigid underground about 40'. Is there any advantages to wrapping the RMC in 10 MIL tape? Is it required? Thanks
 
No it's not required but if you bend the galvanizing cracks, you should wrap the bends especially underground. Underground it?s good to wrap all bends and transitions to plastic, also use copper shield or some type of inhibiter on made threads to prevent rust but again wrap them.

I certain environments it?s amazing how fast RMC rusts, sometimes within 8 years.
 
I havent used it for a long time, but thier was a black product applied like paint that I have used to put on ridged conduit when we penetrated concrete to inhibit corrosion.
 
The only place I've seen it required was on public works where it was in concrete.

A good excuse to burn a few hours on T&M - otherwise - no not really.... Unless you are exceptionally carefull to over-lap, and not have any gaps - it will do - nothing....

I still do it on entrances and exits of concrete and earth 1' above grade and 1' below - that is where the most rust will happen IMO. But it will still rust - nothing is perminent.... But underground for the major portion of the run - the best thing you could do is plan drainage really well and keep the area dry.... Or use PVC and a EGC.
 
I've heard of doing that before, but it would be a royal waste of time in my area. I understand that certain soil types are hard on RMC, so I guess it has some benefit there. Seems like using Rob Roy or Ocal in the first place would save a ton of time.
 
3M makes a pipe wrap tape, but it is intended to use with a strong smelling primer. I gave up on the primer and just wrap the RMC from below the concrete pad to above. But the corrosion on RMC is very dependant on the soil.

I'd love to read that label.

Many moons ago, as a helper, we had to run about 200' of 3" GRC under a parking lot. Another helper and I donned canvas gloves and slopped on pitch the whole length of the assembled pipe, then lowered it into the ditch.

It took a couple of weeks for the stains on my hands to wear away.
 
wow and all I do is bury it..I try and use PVC in direct bury most of the time but in some instances I use RMC..Like if I am installing a air conditioner and I have to go through a flower bed to get to the air conditioner..
