No, you would suffer an INCREASE in secondary voltage because you are now applying 1.7X as much primary voltage by merely connecting the primaries in a delta. This is apparent from the phasor diagrams.
But, with this increase in primary voltage, the iron would saturate resulting in excessive magnetizing current and overheating. That is to say, the primary inductance will not support an increase of 1.7X in primary voltage.
Not only is it not recommended, it won't work! Just buy the right transformer to start with.

What I understood rattus to say was that you couldn't take a primary coil rated 7.2kv and somehow reconfigure it to take 12kv. You would overexcite the coil by the factor of 1.732.
I applaud your interest and your questions. Many of them are unique enough to require specific experience in the power field, and many designers and electricians would have no idea of what you are asking. Keep up the posts.

There is no problem connecting a properly rated 12 kv delta to 120/208 volt wye trasformer in a 12 kv wye system. It happens every day throughout the country. Similarly 480 delta to 120/208 wye transformers are installed in 277/480 volt wye systems even more frequently.Bob, you seem to indicate I could do the operation of installing a 3 phase pad mounted delta-wye transformer and connecting it to my wye primary with no suffering or embarassment contrary to what Rattus says.
