Does anyone know what a zigzag connected transformer is i was reading about it in the nec article 450.5 and dont know what it is. Is 450.5 saying that a auto transformer cant be connect to the grounded conductor of a 3 phase 4 wire system, and that they must create there own neutral

Shaw, Yes, you are not allowed to install a Zig-zag connected transformer on the load

side of any system with a grounding connection.
 

We have used zig-zag transformers to generate a phase-shift to run the second input on a 12-pulse VSD from a 3-phase supply if no electrical isolation is required.
It is much smaller and much less costly than puting in a fully rated double wound D/dy.
