Agree. If one does just replace breakers you can still get them cheaper by purchasing complete with a panelboard. If you then run into problems with your old panel when you start to disassemble things, you still have a new panel ready to replace it with.

Interrupt ratings is something maybe one should consider when making selections. Though they didn't pay as much attention to that long ago, is also possible the available fault current has changed since original install as well.

And just one other thing, many mid to larger framed breakers can be purchased at one of these online breaker suppliers for about the same as the "with panelboard price" from the dealer. But yeah ordering an entire panelboard just to steal the breakers works too. I have had to "remind" some supply houses about that one after they quote me like 2k for a stand alone breaker.

If it is Square D authorized distributor, they know this, and many probably will tell you if you want just one breaker or two that you should order a panel with it. Square D sets those prices and tells the supplier what they are to sell it for, especially on the job quote orders, but they also have some control on everyday stock item prices as well.

While you are at it throw in other items on the order that you may need for other jobs, or just to replenish anything you normally stock yourself.
