So yesturday I go to an auction for a large electrical contractor who is being liquidated by the bank. talk to a guy who has picked up some of the homes from a productin builder that this company was doing. I had to ask what they were getting per home. they are getting $9.50 an opening! A little more for 3 ways and 4 ways not much.

This can't be true maybe he was pulling your leg or just giving you a lowball price to keep you away.

I may be wrong but that $9.50 sounds more like the price paid to a rough-in crew to just do the rough-in. This doesn't include trim or service. This is just a labor rate for piece work.

If it's in an area where they don't require a liense the GC may sub it out as piece work ( much like the framing ). Then all he does is take out workman's comp. give these guys a check and send them a 1099.
 
So I had to do some more inquiring today. And found out that these guys are getting $9.50 for switch and receptacles, $11.50 for 3way, $14.50 per 4 way, $20 per light opening and the GC supplies Fixtures. I didn't find out what they get for the service but my guess is $1000.00. This is for the rough and finish. I have no idea how they are making any money. I know now why I have heard customers tell me the EC charged $300.00 to add a ceiling fan opening.

I have seen many of the homes this EC had wired in the past and have always wondered why they fill the lower portion of the panel with tandems before they start with single breakers. there is always room for them to have just used single breakers, talk about waste of money.

There is another auction on the 28th for another EC.
 
well, if all goes well he is getting 15/hr after material costs. Pay a man $10/hr nets $2.30/hr to the business. Work 20 guys for a year....Let me know if you get any good stuff at that auction.

I am with you on that, my old boss who went to the auction with me said he was getting $9.25 for a receptacle opening in 1970.
