What's a straight nipple......say the same length as an offset nipple? If the answer is a fitting, how long can it be till it's not considered a "fitting" anymore?

That would be an RMC nipple and not a fitting. As Don has mentioned the CMP has bungled this section to the point where even a close nipple with 1/4" of space between the locknuts would require support.

Thanks everyone for all your input, I guess I am going to go ahead and support it (I really have no choice if I want my final) but I don't agree with this at all. (for what that matters)

For the 2017 code cycle we need examples such as this to be sent to the CMP. One of their reasons for not making a change in the rule was their opinion that the support rule is not enforced in the field for short lengths of conduit like this.
