I have heard you can't use water to ease driving rods, but I cannot find it in the NEC... :?
It's not specified in the NEC. But many AHJs have that rule.

Any idea why? Put a little water on inspector and he will drive in ground easier also:happyyes:
Supposedly, using water prevents good contact twixt the rod & the dirt.

Have the AHJ stand on very dry soil barefoot and grab a live conductor, then do same thing on moist soil and let him tell us which conducts better.
So...do you need to build a shelter over the ground rod location so it never gets wet?
Because we all know that water would never soak into the ground around the rod.

Cut the wood handle off a sledge, weld on a piece of black pipe instead. All the guys carry one of these in their trucks.
We'll also take the Hilti along too, if we can. Sometimes you need the Hilti when the sledge won't do it and vice versa.

i use waterproofing cement around the ground rod to keep it dry... i pour a pad 4" thick, and as big
in diameter as the rod is long.
then i put a little cover over it so it doesn't get dirty.
preferably stainless steel, hinged for easy inspection.
then i use oxygen free copper wire, and use an electron
fusion process to join it to the ground rod. 500 MCM to
reduce voltage drop.
it's worked well for me so far.

What kind of gasket do you use on the hinged door? I would assume neoprene. Anything else would be hack.
