Hey guys, I’m an electrical contractor and I specialize in residential EVSE installation. The grace period in New Jersey is over in a few days so we will be on the 2020 NEC which means GFCI protection of EVSE. I have a few questions that I would appreciate help from the code experts.

Most of my installations are either a 50 amp receptacle or hardwired with a 50 amp or 60 amp circuit.

My understanding is that a 50 amp receptacle needs to be GFCI protected whether it’s inside of the garage or outside of the house.

And a hardwired EVSE needs to be GFCI protected only when outside of the house, not when in the garage. Is that correct? Because I’m also reading that a 60 amp hardwire doesn’t need to be GFCI protected no matter where it is, so I’m a bit confused.

I also just want to confirmation that I can use a spa panel (hot tub GFCI disconnect) installed next to the load center to GFCI protect this circuit since some GFCI breakers could be either hard to find or extremely expensive?

625.60(D) requires that any receptacle used to supply EVSE to have GFCI protection.
210.8(F) requires that all outside outlets at one and two family dwelling units operating at 150 volts or less to ground and 50 amperes or less have GFCI protection.

Ok so then in my situation only the 50 amp hardwired would need GFCI protection, not 60 amp.

Perfectly acceptable, location does not matter, just like a kitchen counter receptacle can be a GFCI receptacle or a GFCI breaker or a dead front GFCI device somewhere.
Thank you for the reply. I just wanted to be sure there wasn’t something I was overlooking.

The way some of these inspectors work, I wouldn’t be surprised if they failed the installation because it’s called a “spa panel” so I could only use it for a spa lol.
