50% copper tariff just imposed

The US imports about 45% of it's copper. One would ask can the existing domestic copper mines actually provide that 45% if we only purchased domestically mined copper?

It would take years to ramp that up. And it would still be more expensive - the whole reason a good is imported is because it's cheaper than domestic sources. Tariffs increase the price of domestic sources as well, since they reduce competition from foreign suppliers.

And even though domestic suppliers will see no increase in production costs they'll still jack up their prices to make more profit. Home Depot better hire some armed guards for their electrical department.

They won't need to. The Home Depots in the "nicer" areas are now locking up all wire and the breakers. Spray paint will be next.

My local one is in a low-crime area and they've been locked up for months. One of the employees said it was corporate policy and unnecessary since the "shrinkage" at this store was very low. IMO the ridiculous thing is that, unlike in the past for things they locked up (like power tools), they won't just hand it to you after unlocking it. Now, after first hunting down an employee to unlock it, you later need to get another employee at checkout to retrieve it from the secure vault they put it in near the register. What used to be quick is now slow and involved; I don't have time for this stuff. These days I tend to just order it off their web page, and by the time I get to the store it's sitting in one of the lockers just inside the door. OK rant off.

Or have it shipped to your house. Shipping at Home Depot seems to be free much of the time. I too get annoyed with all the items in cages. I waited 10 minutes last time for a sawsall blade that was in a locked cage.

My closest big box is Menards. Compared to my supply house they may be less on 250 or 1000 foot reels of 12-2 and 14-2, maybe 14-3 at times, other times supply house is less. Probably a timing thing as market prices and their purchases occur. But almost all other wire and cable is less cost from the supply house pretty much all the time.

Yup. Just ordered something last week One day overnight shipping free to my door.

Exactly. I saw an interview with the owner of a manufacturing plant in Wisconsin a few years ago when the 25% steel tariffs were levied. The domestic producers raised their prices 25%.

Copper 12/2 is already up over 20% in the last few months.

Suprisingly, AL hasn't (yet) risen as much as I thought it would would with 50% tarrifs.

Our local Menards has nothing under lock & key that I have looked for. Go 45 miles East to HD and it's a mixed bag.
Same thing for our local Walmart. Nothing but guns & ammo is locked. Go East or West and makeup may be locked up. (MDSW tells me)

None of the Menards I have been to have anything locked. And they have 10x the copper inventory sitting on the shelf than HD does.

Big Orange just lowered 14/2 12/2 and 14/3
two days ago.

It was a substantial decrease.
Weren't they up around $150/250'? They way over shot everyone else on price. They had too. Menards is up to $119 now after 11%, they were $95-$99 AR in Feb.
