I use them along with a blank cover if I have to cut sheetrock below or above a panel for a hand hole to run new circuit's.

If you need a really big hole, just put an HVAC register over it. Especially if something in there needs to be accessible. I did this when my nephew finished his basement and there was a water shutoff where he wanted a sheetrocked ceiling.

They do make access doors for that sort of thing as small as 6x6" you know...
