If you need a really big hole, just put an HVAC register over it. Especially if something in there needs to be accessible. I did this when my nephew finished his basement and there was a water shutoff where he wanted a sheetrocked ceiling.

Depending on the location, a return air grill can look less "out of place"
And they cost less.
