Can you quote the violation in chapter 3 regarding using screws to attach a plastic box to a stud?

I did have one inspector YEARS ago who complained. His issue was that the screws were not grounded so I satisfied him by putting a dab of caulk over them.

If I were an anal retentive inspector I could shut down almost any project with code interpetations.

Here is one of my !6' box trucks.

Man You're not just the master you are now my hero. I am NOT worthy!

if your going from single gang to two gang why not go to plastic? Trace out your box with the single gang in place cut out the sheet rock than pry the single gang out with your screw driver. you wont have to do any touch up at all

On grounding no... But placement yes...
314.23(1) Nails and Screws. Nails and screws, where used as a fastening means, shall be attached by using brackets on the outside of the enclosure, or they shall pass through the interior within 6 mm (1/4 in.) of the back or ends of the enclosure.

Puts them outside of contact areas of devices and where conductors would be in contact or become abraided....

FYI the ~1/4" hole in a metal cut-in box are for 16p nails - but 3" screw works great.

Doesn't that make the "Smart Box" and the Arlington box illegal? Those screws can't be within 1/4" from the back.

PS. What are the "ends of the enclosure"?

It seems to me that every time I read a code section, there has to be something that I don't comprehend.

I understand the top, bottom, back and sides but what are the ends? Is it the opening?

Sitckboy - you have a hyperlink in one of your posts, but it's the home page for Pass & Seymour. What model number box did you have in mind?

THanks

I was quoting someone else, not sure why the homepage is coming up...

Stickboy - sorry about that. I did go back to the post the you replied to, and it did have the unabbreviated link. It shows the Slater line of boxes, and it was a post by Bikeindy.

Just because an inspector says it is okay does not necessarily mean it is a code compliant installation.

And.....just because an inspector says it's NOT OK, doen't mean that it ISN'T a code compliant installation.

I watched and waited for a half hour one time while a city inspector thumbed through his code book trying to find a way to make me install bond bushings on a 2 1/2" rigid nipple between panels (punched holes) . He came back and said "Oh...you have TWO locknuts (on each side)....I didn't see that...it's OK"

PS. I am STILL waiting for a definition of "end of the box".
