Has anyone bought the new 2005 handbook? I just got mine in the mail today and I have to say that the NFPA has done a fabulous job. The diagrams and photos are excellent. This is the best hundred bucks that I've spent in a long while. Just wondering if anyone else has had the opportunity to check it out.

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

Well, I do believe 2 things.

1. You are right about the diagrams and how they did a fabulous job.

2. You got taken to the cleaners on your books. I bought mine for $52.

You must have that gold plated edition. :D

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

$52 is a steal for the Handbook. (I paid $55 for the standard 2005 softbound codebook for my business partner.) I think that I saw Mike Holt selling the Handbooks for $120. I thought that I did good at $100.....

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

According to the NFPA webside the cost of the NEC Handbook is $119.95 and $107.96 for NFPA members. If you buy larger quantities or combinations of codebook & handbook the price can come down to about $91.80.

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

I ordered mine on 11-14-04,it's tracking is in route as I type.
Paid for 2005 Handbook $102.00
Paid for Electronic CD.$144.50
(-A non-member price at that date-)
I'm like a kid waiting on his new toy. Can't wait to get my hands on this Text.Arrival date on Electronic CD still pending, calender date of April,I am so informed..

If you purchased the 2005 edition (Handbook) for $52.00,you do have a connection that I envy. ..I don't understand...Please,if you so choose to, tell us more...Some type of Membership Benefit?

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

has anybody heard anything on the cd version of the handbook? can you download it directly to your harddrive? and has anyone heard if they fixed the problem with the cd version of the code book?

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

I pre-ordered my Handbook CD last summer. I haven't gotten it yet, but I'm expecting it any day, now.

I am beginning to think this did not actually happen. If it did help a brother out. :D
Even though I am technically not a brother (not being an IBEW guy and all), just a poor, hardworking engineer, please help me out too. I want one of them $52 handbooks.

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

Our V.P.got a lead from city head ahj illustrated change handbook for $35.00.Told him I wanted one on friday if it comes I`ll let all know where to go for the savings ;)

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

I will end up with a free one and have gotten free Code books as well. I have a feeling it depends on the Company you work for and the associations you have. For instance, the NFPA passes out free Code books if you are a panel participant, the IAEI passes out a free Code book if you are a member for three years (if that is what you choose), some companies will offer code books at a reduced price to their employees or even free ones.

The price that was quoted was probably from one of those sources. I assure you that a company or other entity picked up the difference. :D

Bigdog,
I heard something about in way of a patch,or something simular.I either read it in a MHE newsletter that goes out via the E-mail,or heard about it on this site..I can't remeber the details, but do recall of the complaining,in asking for a fix for downloading. And as I remeber,I think that a fix was avalable.I do remeber it being as a MHE issue.Any help Mr. moderator sir,or does anyother member, recall this also? Or am I mistaken..

Al,
I think thats great, and you must have ordered before my date of order. If you receive the 2005(Handbook)electronic CD version, anytime in the near future before March. Might you share the delivery date, upon receiving sir.

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

I don't know what came out of the meeting but I do know that the NFPA is looking into the problem. They have gotten a lot of complaints about not being able to use the NEC from the hard drive. It is my belief that they will fix it so it may be used properly. :D

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

Charlie,

I'm glad to hear your optimistic tone. I agree that, as the end user, I expect ready access to what I paid for on one machine of my choice. When first hearing of the issue, all I could do was groan. . .I immediately thought of the current configuration. I have, presently, the electronic '99 & '02 NECH, and, when I installed the '02, it grabbed the '99 and brought it along so both were available through the same viewer (Folio Views).

I, naturally, expect '99 & '02 to come along into the new installation of '05. I know, I know, I'm an eternal optimist. . . Made sense, though, until I heard about the CD-in-the-drive limitation. . .I immediately wondered whether I'd be swapping out all the CDs ('99, '02 & '05). What a crippling limitation on simple fair use of product.

Dillon, my preorder went in last March ( :) Hadn't realized it was that long ago. I just checked for anticipated publication date). I'll be delighted to brag that I've received my copy once it arrives. ;)

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

Here is the response I got from the NFPA when I E-mailed them, voicing my frustrations about the CD-ROM:

Dear Mr. Jackson:
I/we are well aware of your concerns, which are shared by many of your
colleagues (including our own electrical engineers), and we are working
very hard to remedy them.

A revised version of the CD, allowing two downloads to computer hard
drives (and providing via tech support for additionjal downloads if you
change computers) and restoring the search function to its previous
utility.

This involves a fair amount of technical and legal analysis, as I'm sure
you can imagine, but we are aiming for an April 1 instock of a
satisfactory version of the NEC Handbook on CD, and a retrofitted NEC
within days after that, at which time I'm sure we will offer a trade-in
policy for you to return the CD you have and get a version that you'll
find more agreeable.

I'm sorry I can't predict exactly what day, procedure, or final
configuration of the CD will apply, but I am confident you will be
happier with the new edition, and I do apologize for the inconvenience
the first version has caused you.

Best regards,

Charles F. Durang

NFPA

Re: 2005 NEC Handbook

Well my handbook is not gold plated, but it is yellow. I paid full list ($119).

The supply house has the code book for $60. Is there confusion here?
