You're allowed to add up to 6' of a wiring method before it's considered to be a modification of the branch circuit. Having said that what I've stated is irrelevant to your question since you're only replacing a receptacle. If the replacement receptacle is in a location that requires AFCI protection then you must install an AFCI type receptacle.

210.12 but yes that section gives you the locations where AFCI protection is required. If you replace a receptacle in one of those locations and AFCI protection is not already provided then you must use an AFCI replacement receptacle or a standard receptacle with some other form of AFCI protection.
