3 inch metal box seams useless...

What good is a 3.5 inch shallow metal round box at 4 cu ".

guess if you are designing something with use for wires smaller than 14??

Or 2x 14's ac cable or greenfield ???

But then why the rx clamp?
 
Use it with a fixture that has a canopy that is marked with the volume.

(Easy to say, not so sure it is easy to find)
 
A small Pancake Box. Used where there is limited depth in the wall to mount it and the fixture mounted to it has a canopy to do the wire connections. It will fit ON a stud or joist in a typical sheetrock or plaster wall. People actually used them to mount ceiling fans, now there is a fan box where the fan screws go directly into the ceiling joist.

I despise them in new work, and begrudgingly use them in remodeling. 4" size is much more common.
 
I love pancake boxes. They're great when your doing a rough-in before the siding is on. For the out side wall lights. But I generally use the bigger of the two.
Also they're good for bath vanity's if a 2x4 stud is in the way of a normal light pop in box.
 
Pan boxes have there place, also as far as box fill goes if a light fixture has a domed canopy that volume can be added to your box fill volume. Read it someplace.

If it marked with the volume as Iwire stated above.

I knew I read something about it somewhere. So many things go in and as time goes by just as many go out.

Note, it does not say Factory Marked or Manufacturer Marked, just marked.
 
Tell the plumer to move his vent pipe,cause you want to put a 3/0 box hanger instead of a pancake,9 times out of ten on any job the plumers are in there before us and that vent pipe Is almost always center of vanity in rest room,good luck on having him move it,easy fix pancake

Never had one failed by an inspector but we have moved on to the plastic fan boxes that are designed to fit on the face of and along the side of a 2x.. Very similar to the shallow pan but they have a half moon extension that extends back for added cu in.

Most likely an Arlington product. They are the most innovative.
