Hi,
A customer asked me today if we can make her exisiting 3-way switches to dim from both ends. She said she has heard that home depot has a product that allows doing this. Does anyone know anything about some such thing? Thanks, E/M.

I have heard that this exists, but have neither seen nor used it.

Probably with a line carrier addressable system, like X-10, or some newer version. Leviton, maybe also Pass&Seymour. Someone posted a link to similar very recently here.

Lutron Maestro can also dim from both ends. You must be a master and slave switch for this application. Looks like the ones pictured above

The Leviton 6B42 does this.

If either switch is "down" the other acts like a dimmer.

If both switches are down, the light is full on though two metallic contacts.

If both switches are up, it acts flaky.

Pay attention to installation instructions. In particular, many models require the master to be in the box closest (electrically speaking) to the load.

any type of digital 3-way dimmer will work. the master does the dimming, while the slave uses one of the traveler legs as a signal wire.

Cooper has a line of these type of dimmers as well, and they are cheaper than Lutron's. They work just as well. Pay close attention to the slave's in the middle when you rig them up, it goes against what you would normally do for a four way switch, and smokes the unit if you do it wrong......

Thanks,

Thanks,

Thank you all for your input, looks like the client will be happy to know that this can be done with current technology! Best regard, E/M.

I've had to use Insteon alot over the past several years.

Works great as it sends signal through house wiring and RF also. Each unit acts as a repeater, verifying signal then sending it on.

Haven't had one fail yet  ...as opposed to X10

I went to this address and looked at the instructions. It said you had to hook up a neutral to make it work. Not all 3 ways will have a neutral to use. Some would say, just hook it up the bare ground. If you are being honest about your installation this might not be a solution.
