3-way dimmers

Hmmm....25+ years in trade and every 3 way system I've dealt with has a neutral in there somewhere. Just remake a few wires and voila!

Insteon only needs a hot and neutral to work and a switch leg/load at one end. Then you link them, can install single poles in multiple rooms and link them and make in essence a 4 way system anywhere in home.

I have installed them in Master Bedrooms and linked them to exterior lights and given my customers a panic switch.

... has a neutral in there somewhere. ...

I can visualize a 3-way where the source and the load (BOTH)
are located at a single 3-way switch.
The other 3-way switch has two travelers and a hot return.
The switches are, of course, on the high side (before) the load.

I have read that 'California' 3-ways (without an accompanying neutral)
are against code.

Speaking of which, my grandfather had two strings
attached to his pull-chain light, one string to each of two doors.
They worked like a 3-way, and had no neutral at the switch.

Comments?

You have the required neutral!...Just remake a few wires and voila

Not when they were 1st installed...and there is still a neutral available...all California 3 ways I worked with used the hot and neutral as travelers.

It worked as a 3-way...but is not classified as one...and the neutral is at the switch in the light....

Hehe...again....there is a neutral in there somewhere...Just remake a few wires and voila

Maybe it's just me, but when faced with this scenario, I always feed the far(thest) switch with the hot on the white, and use the black and red as returning travelers.

I went to this address and looked at the instructions. It said you had to hook up a neutral to make it work. Not all 3 ways will have a neutral to use. Some would say, just hook it up the bare ground. If you are being honest about your installation this might not be a solution.

Again, "Cooper Aspire Series Dimmers" . Google them. No neutral required, except up at that thar light buuulb.... Cost is about $35 for Master, $25 for slaves. They do require a grounding conductor connection at each box.
