They won't hate you if you get the right remote. They make them that mounts to the wall just like any switch. You might even get a hug if done right!:happyyes:

I agree. There's many different types of remotes or wireless switches that could make this easy.
The only difference I really see is one method means you're gonna climb in the attic for a half hour and fish a wire down a wall with hopefully no fire blocking. VS Going and getting a wireless switch or hand held remote and installing it. Either way you're probably leaving with the same amount of money.

I would run a 3 wire from the original switch to the added switch. Use black and red as the travelers and the white as a switch leg back (taped to identify of course) and connect it to the existing switch leg for the light. Done.

That is what I would like to do, and probably will (except I would use the white taped black and red as travelers)

Dennis, how would the remote system satisfy code as to how it should be hard wired...
And yes, making it harder than it needs to be.

I will probably return the 4w, do a dead end 3 way to the entry switch, and go for future access in attic if questioned from inspector.

OR LEVEL THE CHIMNEY................. :- )

1/2 an hour, man your good................... !!!!

Feed is at three gang box, 3w to fan/light combo, 3w to entry switch.

What wire would you fish down to what switch ? Just wondering ?

I'd just for simplicity fish a 12/3 from the door switch to the switch by the bed along with a 12/2 back up to the light.

All you need to do is install the receiver inside the canopy of the fan and the remote(s) do the rest. If a wall switch comes with it then just replace the wall switch that is there. The hand held remote can be by the bed. Either unit will control both the light and/or the fan. $32.00 for the unit below and you can order the wall switch separately

3 way neutral at switch question.

1/2 an hour wasn't meant as a " I'm that good statement"
It was more to say labor cost more than material in some cases. So I'd opt for a simpler material that cost more vs lower costing material that's more labor intensive.

Oh but you are !!!!

Just playing..

I like the remote..Nice device. Thank you Dennis.

But for sake of the print and satisfying code,

With a 3 gang at the bed (fan light-fan-down lights) and one switch at the entry (for fan light) . It seems like a 3 wire between the two fan light switches (which is understood) or a 4 wire if the neutral is needed at each switch.

As mentioned. I'm going to set it up with no neutral at the entry switch. If the inspector says anything about floor view lay out, I'll go for the open access above. If he still has something to say, I'll knock down the chimney.

(maybe I'll stick the 4 wire in.......see how I feel tomorrow)

Done beating the dead horse.
Thank you all !

If you can control the unit with either the hand held remote or the wall switch, then that isn't so bad. Never see such a pair that will work together like that, but wouldn't be surprised that there is some out there.

So far all I have ever seen for hand held remotes, you must have the remote and any wall switch must be on or you will not be operating the fan or the light, worse yet if you already have three way switch circuit - you don't know if the switches are on or off, and the remote won't work if the switches are off.

3 way neutral at switch question.

Had a customer call on a new house we wired. Customer wanted speak to the person who installed the switches in. She had some concerns.
When I arrived she said she'd like to know why half the switches are in the off position when the lights are on.
Oh the good old days.

Some of the remotes that use a receiver in the fan base allow you to link multiple remotes to the same receiver and let you hand hold or wall mount essentially the same remote. The wall mount then does have to be on top of the original switch box, but it can be.

Being a new home and open attic above.
I would would hard wire the switch and forget about all the handyman solutions.
We are electricians right.
Just saying.;)

So anyone that offers the customer a situation that may be cheaper and more versatile is a handyman? Got it....:D

Although it's not. Wireless is a four letter word in my business :D.
I have been guilty of offering the wireless solution to avoid excessive collateral work ie patching and painting.
Without a doubt I am sure the OP will make the best solution for him and his customer.

Get outside of the dwellings and into commercial/industrial and wireless may become a money/labor saving issue in some instances.

I connected a wireless controller for a livestock feeding operation so the feed truck driver just presses a button on a hand held device he keeps in the truck instead of having to get out of the truck to press a hard wired pushbutton when at the mixing/batching area to fill his next load.

That is cool!
As long as we have high speed and 4G or more? Wireless is here to stay.(I have to admit it is a much better product than it was 15 years ago)
I very rarely install cat or 6 in residences any more except for certain repeaters or Sonos nodes.
