Drill the stud for a 4" octagon. It won't hurt the stud.

I concur. Use a 4" or 4-1/4" holesaw and break the piece of wood out with a pair of channel-type pliers. If it's stubborn, split the piece vertically with a chisel.

Heck, not having you guys work at the house.

How about using one of these and leave the lumber in place.

Whenever I read that section, I believe its talking about fixture wires, not branch circuit conductors...

I seem to recollect that fixture canopies were allowed to be added to the box fill calcs.

Lumber is way overkill.

Not in my home, I have a 1925, there is no overkill.

But even if I had a brand new home that had overkill lumber I would rather a tradesmen find a better way then notching out my lumber. And if I am paying the bill I am the AHJ. :D

 Better keep an eye on the plumber, if you think a 1 1/2 deep notch is going to worry you... ;)

Bob, I feel sure that you would make sure the framing was laid out to allow proper mounting of boxes.:)

Judging from the age of the pipes I think the installers are dead.

Don't tell anyone I did the rework myself, a true DIY.

What? You didn't hire an architect, an interior designer, a structural engineer, and a framer to do that?

No permit?? No inspection???

Too late, he has his finger in too many pies. He is a pet, a cobbler, DIYer,...there is just no stopping him.
