When we say 3wire circuit for lighing does it mean multi, wire circuit
Typically yes.

The only instance I can think of offhand to the contrary is emergency lighting that... for example, a switched ungrounded conductor for normal control, an unswitched for emergency control and battery charging, and a neutral.

Ohh! ...and there is also lighting at line-to-line voltage on a 3? system connected in delta configuration, which also uses three wires and not a MWBC. Common example of this usage is parking-lot pole lighting.

As above, but also householders rather than electricians sometimes refer to a 3 wire circuit as being one that incorporates an EGC as well as hot and grounded.

"my house has old 2 wire circuits, I think that it needs to re-wired with 3 wire circuits"

Would normally mean replacing outmoded ungrounded circuits with new grounded ones.

in the end of the code 2008 there is an example of single phase (example d3)
