4-11/16" Box

Maybe it had to do with manufacturing? Like, how many boxes could be laid out on a 4x8' sheet of steel.

The discussion has gone from the dimensions of a box to the art of running pipe!

What is the actual size of a 1-1/4" KO? 1/2" is 7/8", 3/4" is 1-3/32" and 1" is 1-3/8". I read somewhere that you just add 3/8" to the trade size to get the knockout size but that doesn't quite add up for a 3/4" KO.

I'm trying to figure out if 4-11/16" really is the smallest size box you can get away with for having a 1-1/4" KO.

It will but it's VERY close and not pretty. Saw a guy attempt that once.
I once installed two 1" PVC male adapters in the back wall of each of a pair of single-gang old-work boxes to run LV wiring behind a fireplace insert.

I took my time postioning and drilling them, and the lcoknuts had to be placed just right. I had to turn the adapters, not the locknuts, to tighten them.

Wow - pretty slim thread now.... I guess if we're gonna stay on topic - in some circle the 4-11 is know as a 5S.

And manufactures like a demand for a product - but they are disconnected from the field - which is why they don't seem to be interested in a 14"X(whatever)X4 with a flush cover.

Fun fact of the day! :D
All this fun and a pay check too....

I always figured it might of been the cubic in capacity as it related to #12 wire. 9 wires in and 9 wires out (in a 3/4" EMT) works out to 42.75 cubic inches (with ground). 4-11/16 box is 42 cubic in. (2-1/8"deep)

Yeah, threads tend to lose weight or close when people start talking about the women they dated and the silly pictures start finding their way in.

Perhaps a pattern should be noticed ............... nah, that will never happen.:D

So my post catalyzed in deleting a dozen posts before mine?

Maybe we should become a self-policing forum: Post something really terrible, then immediately delete it ourselves.
