Maybe it had to do with manufacturing? Like, how many boxes could be laid out on a 4x8' sheet of steel.
The reason for 4 11s is that there are covers to fit and nobody makes a 5 inch cover LOL
I'm trying to figure out if 4-11/16" really is the smallest size box you can get away with for having a 1-1/4" KO.
I believe the real question is:
"Will a 1 1/4" locknut fit in a 4" box?"

Dale, I can't believe that you missed Jim's post was a joke.Jim, I'm sure if they made 5 inch boxes they would also make 5 inch covers to fit on them.
I once installed two 1" PVC male adapters in the back wall of each of a pair of single-gang old-work boxes to run LV wiring behind a fireplace insert. It will but it's VERY close and not pretty. Saw a guy attempt that once.

Wow - pretty slim thread now.... I guess if we're gonna stay on topic - in some circle the 4-11 is know as a 5S.
And manufactures like a demand for a product - but they are disconnected from the field - which is why they don't seem to be interested in a 14"X(whatever)X4 with a flush cover.

So my post catalyzed in deleting a dozen posts before mine?Yeah, threads tend to lose weight or close when people start talking about the women they dated and the silly pictures start finding their way in.
Perhaps a pattern should be noticed ............... nah, that will never happen.![]()
Maybe we should become a self-policing forum: Post something really terrible, then immediately delete it ourselves.Yeah, threads tend to lose weight or close when people start talking about the women they dated and the silly pictures start finding their way in.

"11-B" is a new one on me too.I have heard the terms "2100 box" and "11-B" to describe a 4-11/16 box.
Never heard of a "5S" until this thread ... :-?
