Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

What I am having trouble finding is a listed connector for # 4 solid ground wire, trying to avoid cadwelds.

Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

I'd like to see this too because I'm told by, some people, that irreversable bonds are not acceptable, even where specificly allowed by code.

Edit: Of course you need the correct crimper?

The NEC allows it and as long as ul listed then I need one yesterday.

Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

The most common compression connector used for splicing or taping solid ground wire is a C-Tap. This will require a special die or a hand held tool.

curt what nanufacturer and distributer ?

Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

Allen, the picture I posted was from Burndy but any of the compression connector manufactures should have them. Call your supply house and tell them you are looking for a C-Tap rated for #4 solid (tap and run) and they should be able to find one. You might try Graybar or Grainger since there computer systems will show if any branches have them. The Graninger part number is 3LM32.

Ryan, Larry, Pierre,

Would you guys have any objections to these on a GEC under 250.64(C)?

Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

I think cadweld is even making these type of products now. Its easy to see why if you have ever had two much moisture in your cad weld when its been fired off. Its amazing how many people don't know how dangerous a cadweld can be if its done wrong! There is a lot of risk out there for a electrical contractor.

Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

Sam, these are listed "irreversible" compression connectors so they should meet the requirements of 250.64(C).

Allen, Grainger also hase a mechanical tool(3LT16) including the dies for thes connectors if you don't have a tool. I'm sure you could get better prices than Grainger but probably not get the items as fast. This is going to be a pretty expensive splice if you have to buy a compression tool.

Re: #4 bare CU irreversible connectors

This is all in acordance with a local ruling no more uffer a #4 from the footer to the meter. We just started a new sub division and we bid and planned back to backs but the poco wont swing to us. So I have to meet them.tags have been done and want to find the best course of action.Just got a power matrix but 12 slabs are done and with copper at over $1 a lb. I bet thefy will ba an issue.
