I have installed a 400amp underground meter socket with two 200amp panels back to back, drove two 5/8 copper clad ground rods 6 feet apart, wired the panels with three 3o thhn copper. What size should the wire be for the grounding electrodes? I used #6 thhn copper. According to the code 250.66A this is what is allowed. The village where installed failed this because it needs #2 to the grounding electrodes. Is this true or false. The next thing the inspector told me was to drive a 10' 3/4 inch single ground rod with #2 thhn copper. The village does not have any additional amendments. Please help.

Dose this job have a metal water pipe or a metal frame building? If so you need to run a no.2 cu to water and frame. Neal

Re: 400 amp underground meter install

Might open a can of worms with this. But there are area`s that when sizing the grounding wire size they insist that you use the conductor that matches the largest possible conductor that would be wired to this service ( Mind you that this a residential situation no xfmr etc .Just a 320/400 back to backed and no underground done at time of rough in ) Behind door #1 - #6 and door # 2 - #4 and behind door #3 - 1/0 . Which will you pick.Remember keep in ming the largest possible wire that CAN feed this serviceand not what pocos actually install

Allen, that horse is dead, beaten, thrown in the ground, dug back up and beaten some more. The bottom line is that the NEC allows #6 to driven ground rods, and if inspectors insist otherwise, they need to be challenged.

Allen, have you ever seen the areas amendment in writing or even asked to see it?

Yes roger I did see the written change from the inspectors books in his truck.City of Tampa, same page has pool wiring to be run in pipe and have a insulated grounding conductor. There were several others that were in it but I didn`t have the time to read all of them.Dated 1/01/98 effective date

Re: 400 amp underground meter install

And so which door did it say to use?

BTW, there is no limit to the largest possible wire that can feed this service except the maximum size where manufacturers stop.
