Can anyone offer up some feed back on a standby generator by Generac. It's called the: Centurion (Costco sells them)

I have a customer that wants to buy her own from Costco. Personally, I haven't had any experience with the Centurion by Generac, nor have I ever heard of Centurion. It's a propane type generator. Just trying to get a heads up before I move forward in recommending the unit we know well= Eaton

Any feedback--as far as realiablity and such will be nice.

Thanks!

I have a 16kw generac and it works great. Never had a problem. Had a hurricane come through here a couple of years ago and it ran for days.

You left my favorite off http://www.cumminsonan.com/ We have deployed a bunch of these in our power plants and they seem to work well however I don't know about cost because we bought them all at the same time 25+ gens makes people competitive.

Wow, I read all 6 pages. Generac seems to be a joke, and somewhat a monopoly--hiding under other names. Two of many being: Eaton, and Centurion. Thanks for the info. Now, I'm stuck!!!

Seeing that I've been educated, I wish i could modify the poll. If a moderator cares to do it for me, that would be great!

Yeah, i don't know how I missed Cummin. Maybe we can replace Eaton with Cummin, and put Eaton next to Generac....Goodness Eaton........

At work we have over 160+ Generac's in service. They range from 25kw to 80kw. Some are diesel, some are LP. I guess on a whole they are ok as long as you keep up the maintenance on them. I also have installed the smaller 15kw Generac Guardian models they seem to be an ok unit also. The only thing I do not like is the Generac HTS transfer switches.

If you're looking at commercial applications then I agree with Bob (iwire). You'd be much better off with a Kohler or other high quality brand. However, if you're looking into residential sales you're probably not going to get homeowners to drop their hard-earned dollars on a generator that's going to be $1200-$1600 more than a Generac gen set. IMHO, if the lady wants to buy her own generator, let her do so. You can install whatever she wants, get paid the $$ you want for it and then walk away. She'll be responsible for filing all the warranties.

If you're looking to do basic maintenance work on the generator (i.e. oil changes, etc) you can buy those kits on-line. On the other hand, if you're looking to do service work on the generator, you'll end up on the short end because Generac won't sell you any parts unless you're an authorized, trained and stocking dealer.

I would not go so far as to call them a joke. We have been selling and installing them for years as dealers. The manufacturer certainly has some issues in regards to business practices, affecting the dealer more than customer, IMO, but overall it has been a good product. You could argue that it may not stand up well vs. the Onans, Kohlers, Cummins, etc in some areas, but that is one of the reasons it is priced better than those also. In actuality, the new air-cooled lines are some of the best generators that Generac has put out.

If you were looking for a genny for your own home, what brand would you choose?

While we're at it: Air or water cooled? 1800 or 3600 RPM?

What size for a typical 200a service with less than 100a load?

I have a Briggs & Stratton 20kW unit now for 3 years and it has given me great service. It comes on within 2 minutes, the ATS transfers the entire house without a problem, even with a large air conditioner unit running. It goes on once a week for 20 minutes to keep everything lubricated. It is an air-cooled, natural gas (use to be propane, but the service changed), have a semi-annual maintenance performed on it, no problems.

Sounds like reasonable questions to me?
