Absurdly Simple Question

I felt like I couldn't pigtail a piece of 12 to 14 and use a 20 amp breaker, nor could I use a 12 hot and 14 neutral on a 20 amp breaker, 12 all the way both before and after the resistance.

The 12 would be the heat sink for the breaker but the 14 would still be wrong.

If a smaller grounded conductor were acceptable, you would see NM and MC made with a #12 phase conductor and a #14 white, With all the large projects that are built it would save millions over time.

I noticed some proponents of a smaller grounded conductor have not posted after logic and code sections were posted. some people can't accept being wrong.
