AFCI data on home fires 10 yrs later. Any real evidence they work’?

The arrogance of the pro-industry people that have defended AFCI's is just astonishing. The attitude is basically "We don't care what you think, they are here to stay so tough."

At the end of the day, manufacturers are in it to make money and more importantly, profit. They have no other reason for existing. Profit is a great motivator and not always for good reasons. Ponder that one for a while and you'll understand why some of us do not trust a single word that comes from the AFCI manufacturing industry.

That's true as far as the NEC is concerned. But individual states can amend them out of the code as has already happened or stop using the NEC entirely if they so choose. So the "they ain't going anywhere" arrogance gets you nowhere.

Of course you care, you represent the manufacturing industry and the goal of the industry is to make money. If people aren't buying your products, you're not making money.

Would you care if people didn't want to buy Encore wire? Of course you would care. Which leads me to my next point - I work for a residential contractor that wires many new houses and condos every year. Guess which brand of wire myself and the rest of the crew want on our jobs? Hint - it's not Encore. ;)

It wouldn't be that difficult. New devices would have a chip with an ID and a current pattern. When plugged in, the device and the breaker would do a 'handshake' and the breaker would allow this new load without tripping. Any load without a 'handshake' would shut down the breaker.

As fast as communication technology is growing, and the size of the devices are shrinking, I think 'smart breaker' technology is not too far off the horizon.

It could even be done now with infrared detectors each room wired into like a shunt trip breaker. If the infrared sees a hotspot in the wall it kills the affected circuit.. writing a program for such a simple action should not be too difficult, nor would the hardware be too hard to make. many fires of electrical origin go out by themselves if power is shut off early enough.

All that written, if there are to be any more mandates in homes for fire safety, sprinklers would be more effective than anything electrical that could ever be installed.

That is where er differ....I dont care if you use, support or like AFCI's.....it seems all of YOU with an agenda bring up other garbage...as usual. Again I could care less what you use....LOL

The last I read was that there was a bill in state congress to re-instate AFCI requirements. It was sidelined for technical review, and that's the last I heard of it.

VERY well-written article! I wish other states would take notice of it -- especially the ones that require AFCI breakers on nearly EVERY circuit! And I hope they don't foolishly reinstate the requirement in Michigan.

Do you have reading comprehension difficulties? I just explained that we do care what we use. We prefer Southwire Romex brand over Encore, our crew specifically asked our boss to stop buying Encore wire and stick with Romex and he obliged us. I'm giving you real world feed back on the ground about your product and how much it sucks. But you're so high up on the food chain that you don't care, right? :roll:

You can't be pro AFCI and pro Bible at the same time. You see, the AFCI is a lie and a scam. Furthermore, the manufacturers openly lied about having a combination AFCI device more than a full decade before it was introduced. I'm pretty sure the Bible has something to say about lying.

Is this the kind of commentary that we should expect from professionals who represent the NEC and manufacturing industry? If so, it confirms all the suspicions that myself and many others have.
