Allen,
the above post that I was referring to stated that there was a multi-wire circut ran to the bedrooms, "...one neutral (with black, red ,and green)"
The problem could be solved with the proper AFCI breaker (as Kirk stated bove, Cutler Hammer makes this breaker)

Also, the post stated, "...they placed the AFCI neutral to the neutral bus, along with the multiwire neutral".
This could be solved by a simple correction.

I don't see why all 300 bedrooms had to be rewired.

Re: AFCI testers

Article 110.3 (B) Installation and Use. Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling. Push to test is the true test of breaker. How many people carry a current source to test thermal or the magnetic portion of breaker for residential? I am not in the testing business only the install. If I had to test all functions: Long delay, short delay, ground fault, instantenous, both pick-up and time. I follow Article 110.3 and use the PUSH TO TEST

Re: AFCI testers

Luke Warmwater, the project concluded summer of 2003 with buildiing warranty lasting a year. That's why the new DP/AFCI Cutler Hammer breakers weren't used. During planning, conduit was spec'd thru-out the project, BUT was 'change-ordered' for money saving reasons to include/allow MC cable . So, all drywall was finished before our punchlisting started. SO, there wasn't any 'rewiring' as much as there was 'altering and adding' of circuits(more MC cable). Drywall had to be cut into to add this, resulting in remudding/repainting the walls affected.
Also, the post stated, "...they placed the AFCI neutral to the neutral bus, along with the multiwire neutral".

Now you know why.
If the conduit-only spec had remained, additional neutral/hots could have been easily added, 'a simple correction', using the origional single-pole AFCI breakers.

Re: AFCI testers

Found and interesting OSHA document concerning Ground Fault testers. Electrical/Electronic Technical Note 91-1 "The Office of Electrical, Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering Safety Standards does not recommend the use of GFCI testers as a means of determining compliance, as such testers may not produce accurate results." Starting to see many testers and they all have there SNAFUs. I looked at a FOX AFCI Tester and got a laugh. "7) To verify the operation of the AS2000, plug the unit into a non-AFCI protected outlet with a near-by radio, you will hear a short buzz when the AS2000 is plugged into the outlet." Now my inspectors and i must carry a radio around to test the tester.
Also, these test manuf. say press the test button on the breaker to see if it works.
I think Fox has a buzz.
