Re: Apprentice Shopping List

You're guys's jaws would drop to the floor if you knew how small my tool inventory was.

You might be smarter than the rest of us. It's a shame to see a zillion dollar cam track bender collecting dust in the shop.

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

Working for a number of contractors I have tons of access, but still 95% of the time I don't need much.

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

There's nothing more I can say without this whole thing going completely south. :D :D :D

I had to scrap my last three attempts at a comment. :D

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

I have 2 different wire strippers in my tool pouch. One of them is the actual wire strippers which has the stripping holes between the jaws. Wire stripping holes between the handles does not work. However, it just is NOT a good crimper for #22 to #10 wire.

The other pair of "strippers" is what I use for cripming. It is no good for wire stripping.

I also have 2 different sizes of beat up or cheap Chinese screwdrivers fo doing knockouts and locknuts.

My attitudes about buying Cheap Chinese tools are:

1. Chinamen need to eat too.

2. The best way to bring democracy and freedom to China is to show them what a little bit of capitalism and freedom will do for them. Then, they will demand more.

3. The steel in Chinese tools rusts less than a lot of American made tools that I have had. A good grade of steel without any surface coating rusts less than aluminum. The reason why manhole covers, locomotives, railraod rails, dump trucks, garbage trucks, yada yada have alomost zero rust is because they are made of better steel.

A better grade of steel does not really cost that much extra since some people are willing to pay for it. However, a car that takes 50 years to rust away like railcars do would be "bad for business".

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

It has always been my opinion that green apprentices are the lowest paid (DUH) of the lot and have not a clue what to buy. When an apprentice starts at my company I purchase them all tools I feel they will need, if the stay more than a year then the tools are theirs. If the leave prior to one year I get the tools back or deduct them from their last pay check. I have never had a problem with apprentices leaving within the one year period.

isn't it better for people to supply their own hard hat and safety glasses? most people have their own preferences along these lines, and they are so inexpensive these days, that it seems silly to supply them. go buy your won. same with safety shoes. you need shoes anyway. maybe in a technical way employers are required to provide these items, but since you can get a very servicable set of safety glasses, hard hat, and safety shoes for under $100 , it seems silly to require an employer to pay for them.

Brian, I don't have a problem with it, but that's technically against the law.
How do you slip that by the accountant??

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

In the past, I had 2 different employers that "Managed" a "tool account" for all thier employees. They would purchase the tools for us and we could decide how much to be taken out of our checks every week. I believe it was listed as an "Advance in pay" on our checks for the sake of payroll & accountants? They would do the same for any material we needed for personal use also. As long as everything is correct, and accounted for I don't see why it would be unlawful. I guess I could blow the dust off of my 50lb Contractor's Manual and look it up!

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

Has anyone mentioned a headlamp?
I wish I had one way back when. Keeps your hands free. Great for crawling in attics. Can be attached to your hard hat.
They have some really light weight ones now, LED, etc. Runs on AA batteries

Re: Apprentice Shopping List

I've never used one. I know I would have appreciated having one a couple million times.
