Does anyone know if arc fault receptacles are available? Anyone know a manufacturer or unit cost? Last I heard, manufactures were not making them yet.

None are on the market.

Yet.

I've heard stories that when AFCIs first came out, P&S actually made a batch of AFCI receps for testing purposes, Then the Code changed from 'receptacles' to 'outlets', and they abandoned the R&D.

Of course, even if you could get hold of one, they wouldn't be usable today because they're not combo style.

At the IAEI code changes class that I was at a UL rep said that one product is a few months from getting a listing and a second product has started the listing process.

Just a reminder that UL is not about to list anything that depends on a patent to operate.

OK, maybe I phrased that poorly; but I do know that UL refused to consider a standard for testing AFCI's until after the patent(s) were released to the public domain.

This is fairly common at UL - someone wants a 'standard' written that only their product can meet. UL won't play that game.

There are millions of things with patents.. And just as many things with patents that never get past the paper design stage.

A patent is one thing. Having the critter in your hand, on the job site, ready to install it, it another.
