Well, 2008 is here. Are the new arc faults in the supply houses? Everybody installing them as on today? My boss has interpeted the code a little differently then the surounding areas. (nothing new). We are requiring the change as to date of permit issue 1/1/1008. So it will be a few months before I have to look for them. As BPHGRAVITY stated, they accually are required to be installed as of 1/1/08 per the 2005 NEC.

Arc fault, isn't that one of those funny lookin animals that eat ants? I have dealt with a lot of supply houses that are not even aware of the '08 afci requirements. I remind them to stock up on those breakers and they look at me kind of funny! I think it is odd that the nec is going to require this and at the same time we still have states that do not have a licensce requirement for ec's!?!??? nec...National Electrical Confusion!!

Those manufacturers were right on schedule for getting them to the market.

I think Don may be right - they aren't on the market because they don't have a working product yet.

I'm glad to see that the AHJ in New Jersey has hit the ball out of the park on this one. As of today we still are not required to install any AFCI devices. We'll just sit back and watch the rest of you try to install a product that isn't available. I can't believe that not many other states and jurisdictions have not addressed this issue.

What??? Not even in res??????????????????????

We, in Ft Collins, Co, will start enforcing them based on permit #'s pulled starting 1/2/08. Seimens & Sq.D are available. The CH guy I talked to had no idea what I was talking about  . But, I believe CH combo AFCI breakers are also available.

Washington State has said they won't delay the implementation of 210.12 as the AFCI combination circuit breakers are readily available.

Have you actully seen one in a supply house? I checked last week with local supply houses and none are in stock and they have no idea when they will get any.
Don

we in the Denver metro area do not have to worry about the 2008 code i unitll June . as that is when the City of Denver is adopting the code
The state of colorado electrical board willl not be adopting the 2008 code unitll July 2008.

I talked with my local supplier/ Colorado Electric supply AKA City Electric supply and the CH rep has told them they should have the new combo AFCI in by the end of the month

Forgive me here for my obvious ignorance but what does the term combo mean here? I didn't follow the 1000's AFCI posts last year because they seemed to be all the same, but now I am lost with COMBO. Combo AFI/GFI ???? I don think combo breaker/AFI is it because I see those in the big orange. Combo meaning 2 pole??? I dont know.

So some one fill my ignorant head with some info since I didnt do my homework.

Thanks

It is not a 2008 code. It is a 2005 code taking effect 1/1/08

Combo AFCI = detects series and parallel arcs. The older ones just detected one of them (can't remember which...)

Combo AFCI is not a AFCI/GFCI (although these exist)

See NEC '05 210.12(B)

You da man thanks.

I just got off the phone with a representative that I know and trust from Seimens.
He told me that the Combination type AFCIs are available to all supply houses. They will be shipping them from a distibution location in the midwest. There is approximately a 3 day lead time unless they are overnighted. He did mention that there are many supply houses waiting to order the combo type AFCIs. One of the reasons is they are waiting to sell out the stock of feeder type AFCIs before they order the Combo type.
I called a supply house that I have partnered up with (that is a different story  ) and he told me that he could order as little as one and it would take at least 3 days without overnighting. The price differential is quite surprising to me. They will be approximately $15-$17 dollars more.

I asked the Seimens rep why so many supply houses have not ordered them and he said it was $$ thing with them. They do not want to stock their shelves with an item that is not selling. That is frustrating the manufacturer.

WE HAVE A WINNER!! WE HAVE A WINNER!!

The guy I worked for bought some Siemens/Murray combos last Friday. And I may even get to install them. Wow...life is complete now.
