Re: arcfault breakers

(a) I don't believe you will find a "arc-fault device" on the market yet other than a breaker.
(b) a little more controverisal (not that any such things happen here)..210.12 says " branch circuits ..shall be protected by listed arc-fault"..some argue, since the branch circuit originates at the overcurrent protection device, the arc-fault must be the overcurrent device.

Re: arcfault breakers

But you can include non-bedroom outlets on the AFCI bedroom circuits. Just be sure all 15 and 20 amp 120V branch circuits supplying outlets in bedrooms are AFCI protected.

So, you can hit a hallway outlet on your way to the bedroom, no foul. :)

Re: arcfault breakers

Read the exception to 210.12 in the 05 NEC.The way I read it is, when the AFI device does become available, it will have to be installed within 6' of the panel feeding the circuit.

Re: arcfault breakers

If there were a device that you could install at the first outlet in a circuit, and that would AFCI-protect the downstream outlets (like you can do now with GFCI receptacles), you could put it the hallway, and protect the bedroom outlets downstream. If it is not within 6 feet of the panel, then you would need to put the conductors from the panel to this first outlet in metal raceway, or use a cable with a metallic sheath.
