Are receptacles required on island in walk-in closet?

My son is building a house which has a large Master Bedroom walk-in closet (10'x12') that has an island (4'wx2d'x3'h) in the middle that will have drawers and shelves. The plans showed 2 receptacles located on the island. Well....... he just poured the slab and we forgot to install a underground conduit to bring power to the island. They are planning to have stained concrete thru the whole house so really don't want to cut into the concrete to run power now.

So the question is: Are receptacles required by code on an island located in a walk-in closet? Looking at 210.52(C) regarding countertops and work surfaces it states countertops in kitchens, pantries, breakfast rooms, dining rooms, and similar areas of dwelling units require receptacles so it doesn't specifically mention closets unless that is considered a "similar area of dwelling units".
 
If you were really concerned about the ahj requiring outlets, build the island on wheels (and maybe perhaps they will be removed later).

If the plans showed them, then someone is expecting them.
Personally, I would want to be able to plug in my electronic chargers.
 
Not sure if your it’s your son’s own house, or he is the builder for someone else, but like others have said, if it’s on the prints, the HO probably requested it of the Architect,
 
It's not required so if you don't want to groove and patch the concrete just don't install them.
 
If they really wanted it I would probably try cutting a pretty large hole under the island, and a second hole directly under the nearest wall, and tunnel between the two (using varying lengths of conduit and beating them with a hammer to "drill" a hole between the two).
 
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, it my son's own house he is building. They are okay with no having receptacles on the island but just wanted to be sure that didn't violate a NEC requirement which sounds like it doesn't. The AHJ/Electrical Inspector is a very practical guy so don't think I'll have any problem with him. Thanks!

FWIW I have an island in my walk in closet and I put an receptacle in it when I built it. I am very glad I did. Good for cell phone charger, occasional iron, etc.
 
The underlying concept behind receptacle placement is where the cords will ultimately go. Not across doorways where they can be tripped over, not across sinks, and not so far that an extension cord is required.

So I'd say, yes, they're required. By purpose, if not by Code. (that, plus being specified on the print)
 
Agree it would have been nice to have a receptacle on the island but to do it now is a problem for 2 reasons, stained concrete thru the whole house and it is a post-tension slab. Hanging from the ceiling is not really an option since they are hanging a chandler light fixture above the island and wouldn't look good. So bottom line as I understand it is ...... nice to have but not required by code.

Post-tension and stained concrete to boot-guess he is not getting a receptacle in the island for sure.:)

Technically a chandelier is not permitted in a clothes closet. Might want to check with the inspector or try to change the room designation to a dressing room.
