An equipment manufacturer (overhead door) supplied 20 feet of shielded flexible cord with one end factory terminated at their 3 phase motor to be connect to their control panel. They also provided various low voltage (<50VDC) multiconductor cables for other controls integral to the equipment. The local inspector is rejecting the installion because our electrician ran the cords in conduit (metal), one of which passed through a wall. The motor cable and low voltage cables were run in seperate conduits. He sites 400.7-10. My contension is that as is the case with many other articles, 400 does not apply to wiring integral to equipement. Am I wrong? The manuafacturer recommends the use of shielded cable in their installation documentation but does not specify installation/protections. Any comments would be appreciated.

If the cables or cords aren't one of the types listed in table 400.4, then I don't think it is called a "flexible cord", and 400.7 doesn't apply.

Are the shielded cables "two wire, shielded, twisted pair cables"? IMO, that isn't any closer to being a "flexible cord or cable" than THHN wire is.

The primary cables in question is a 16/6 shielded SEOOW. The others (low voltage) are part of electronic sensors and are not seperable marked only with UL Listing as well as temperature and voltage ratings.

SEOOW is listed in table 400.4. Therefore the installation of this cord must comply with Article 400.

Let me use an example. If i have a projector that has a factory installed cord, I can't run that cord through a hole in the drop ceiling to an outlet in the drop ceiling because that is prohibited by 400.8(2).

Ok. Last thing. the manufacturer provides a race in the frame of the door to run the SEOOW motor cord in. The race is an intregal part of the equipment and is provided with a knock out and access cover. If the race is used in this way and standard THHN in conduit is used between the race (SEOOW)and the control panel is this allowed? My feeling is yes.

Fatbob,
Article 400.8 prohibits flexible cord from being placed in conduit, it cannot be concealed in building nor can it pass through walls or ceilings. I have had experience with some manfactured products with listings that allow factory supplied cord to pass through cabinet walls (as in a microwave oven mounted above a range) and some dishwashers allow similar installations. In each case it is part of the listing and the installation manual for the listed, manufactured product specifically allows this.
Most installation manuals require that all electrical work meet "local code". In your case you have mentioned that local code is the NEC. If your manfuacturer has not listed the product with the factory supplied flex cord in conduit or passing through walls etc then the NEC must be used for the installation. Again I reference NEC Article 400.
The access cover you mentioned would be for installation of your low voltage conductors. The chase would allow your low voltage conductors to be installed in a raceway and then through the chase. THHN electrical conductors installed in raceways are allowed to be installed in the chase. Maybe not together with your low voltage though
Sorry for the lenghty reply...
regards,
TD
