Bonding at the meter

I was informed today by the poco that we now can start bonding at the meter, they still dont want it inside the meter, but say it is ok to scrape some paint and mount a lug to the outside of meter for the ground rods. Does this mean that I can leave out the bonding screw in the panel and seperate grounds and neutrals? and also will the water pipe ground have to originate from the same point? I still will call poco to send something over to state the changes. This change would help cut costs for multi-unit buildings.
Thanks in advance.

It's too bad the location of each poster is not displayed. Are you in a high lightning strike area?

Re: Bonding at the meter

sjaniga, attaching the GEC to the meter can will not change anything else.

Bennie, I still wonder why the profile information was changed.

Re: Bonding at the meter

sjaniga: Some utility companies require meter gaps on all services. These gaps are set to flashover at 6 to 8 KV. The purpose is to shunt a lightning surge to earth, before it hits the service panel and premises wiring.

A grounding electrode conductor, from the meter can to a rod, is necessary for the system to function properly. A ground electrode conductor from the NG bus will bond to this electrode and any others present.

Re: Bonding at the meter

You remove the paint from the meter socket to get a good connection for the grounding electrode conductor, I wonder what that connection will look like in a year? No a good connection I bet why not tie inside the meter socket ?

Re: Bonding at the meter

We permitted the supplemental GEC to be connected in the meter fitting until someone in our meter area convinced our Goldbook Committee to not allow it anymore because of tampering. After several years, I was put on the committee and combed through the book to see if we had any Code violations (we did). Along with those, I proposed permitting the supplemental GEC back into the meter fitting. After all, the meter fitting is the best place for connection except for overhead service drops, which would be at the service point. We now permit the supplemental GEC to land in but not pass through the meter fitting, junction cabinet, or any meter cabinet.

The Code permits the supplemental GEC to be attached to the grounded conductor at any accessible location from the load end of the service drop or lateral to the service disconnecting means or to any service raceway or service enclosure.
