Box fill question

314.16(B)(2) says an allowance shall be made where one or more internal cable clamps are "present" in the box, not when they are being "used" within the box.

You are correct it does say that.

However, if you don't use the internal clamps do you still deduct single volume?

Most I have seen do, and if so, I think we are allowed to include them in our fill calculations, are we not? Otherwise, how would pancake boxes be legal?

Most I have seen do too. But I'm not sure how it is used for calculating fill.

Technically they are supposed to be marked with their volume to count. If someone made a stink about it the code doesn't say how it has to be marked so you could make your own calculation and use a sharpie...314.16(A).

:D

I would say that box has to go because I don't see a grounding conductor.

314.4 says metal boxes should be grounded. Worrying about .2 of a cubic inch of fill is pretty moot in this case. Or am I just not seeing a grounding conductor????

Plan was to add a pigtail to the shorter gnd wires and groung the box and fixture.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't we reduce the box fill by .5 or .25 according to 314.16B(5)?
Those grounding conductors must be 16 or 18 AWG. (No pigtail added.)
Still not where we need to be but the "sugar cube" is getting smaller.

but what about using a metal box on an circuit with no EGC? Also, it looks like the clamps are right on the conductors and the sheath is not sticking out 1/4 inch like it should be.

Every single box in this house (save the few I've added) is metal and there are no EGC. 1953 build.

Hard to tell gauge from the picture, but there is sheath under the clamps. Maybe not 1/4", but not on bare conductors.

Does the chandalier canopy give any relief?
I personally would hang it and move on.......

Yep. If pancake boxes are legal for anything, 3 14/2 w/g in this box doesnt exactly top my "NEC concern" list.

You maybe could replace the box with a 2 1/8" deep one and adjust the canopy to still fit flush with the ceiling.

Good morning.

For standard Boxes, I think that you have to use the Table 414.16A. That is in a reference from article 314.16A.1
