Make's you wonder why anyone would pay for drinks when they can get them for free doesn't it.

that's my philosphy...i get all my drinks, my room, my meals for free (or at least I used to:D) so why would I pay for a room?

oh yeah, most of the time, I would have saved $5-10,000 if I just paid for the room and drinks;)

the real problem is that the average person, well lets just say they aren't too smart, and they are easily manipulated...

so, ration and reason is a hard argument to use against an illogical person...

logic tells you - nothing is free, somebody pays for it...the average person figures is always someone else paying for it:D

logic tells you - mass market retail is different than a 1-4 man service operation.....yet the average person continually attempts to compare the 2

this list could go on, but the guys that get it, get it....and those that don't never will...

yep.
i don't gamble in casinos, i have the bidding process for that thrill.

my father was the quintessical high roller. when i was 7, he and mom went
to vegas for the weekend. it was 1962. i stayed with grammma.....

dad said he "felt lucky" when they got there, so mom, bowing to the obvious,
went upstairs, and went to bed. she awoke in the morning, to find the
other side of the bed unmussed.

dressing and going downstairs, she found my father, with a bar girl on each
arm, blind drunk, and playing blackjack. there was a crowd around, watching.
she watched him win $30,000 in about 20 minutes. in 1962. he was blind
drunk, doubling down, and betting wildly. it had been running like that long
enough to draw a crowd of several dozen people. a small mob.

he finally got up from the table, and my mom asked him "why on earth did you
stop? you were WINNING SO MUCH!!!!"

in a drunken stupor, he said "i can afford to quit now."

he never did tell her the whole story, but the year before he died, we were
talking, and he told me that he had lost $400,000 and then won it all back
again that night.

he was absolutely broke at 3 am, and won it back by breakfast. technically
speaking, the house changed hands twice that night.

i'm not a big fan of gambling.

So you don't think when they come out and do your job they didn't factor the free estimates they gave other customers and didn't get the job into their overhead and include it in the price they gave you?

Just like you pay for shoplifters you pay for estimates.

You may not see a line item for free estimates given to others on your invoice but it's in there.

You really don't think you pay for estimates?

I understand that the person that is coming out to do the job deserves to make money. I also believe that the quality I am going to receive has value. I also do not believe in waisting my or the person I calls time over a nickle. That is what I meant not that the time involved has no cost or value.

So you do understand you pay for estimates.

Giving free estimates stinks, but at least you have a chance of getting the job. When i tell them there will be a charge and that charge will be wavied with a signed contract, they say no thanks.I explain to them that there not getting a "free estimate" that it's included in most contractor's estimate you just don't know it.If we all charge for a estimate then they will look for who charges the least for there estimate:rolleyes:

I thought we beat this horse to death on another post.

The days of those who attempt to charge for estimate are numbered. They will not be competitive.

Is anyone aware that they actually have to PAY for the privilege to bid on a public or any state or federal project?

Not only do I not charge for estimates I don't charge for....

Gas
Trucks
Tools
Insurance
Utilities
Equipment
Avertising
Etc.

The only thing I charge for is the actual work itself and the materials I use.
Everything else is free. :)

If the customer isn't paying for estimates why should he pay for any of my other overhead items? Why not just say they're all free?

We are not talking about state or federal projects.

Maybe you felt it was beat to death but some of us still like to discuss this stuff. If you don't there's no need to view it and respond. :)

My supply house has free delivery ,I am not stupid I know it is an embedded cost. I pass this cost on in my material markup. Its called free enterprise I don't understand getting hung up on the word "free".I started promoting "no extra charge for estimates" it does not say they are "free" but it does imply that their is no cost to the estimate.
