If the year end bonus wasn't in your employment contract be appreciative you received anything and keep your mouth shut. Some people just don't get it...

Bonus?

Bonus?

I always thought a bonus was something the boss gave you if the company had a good year and not something to be expected. Yeah a bonus may help the guy's morale but as far as I'm concerned the best bonus a guy can have this year is a good job, and a good place to work, if you have that, the rest will take care of itself.

I was grateful I was still employed this year - it was quite slow before the holidays. I was pleasantly surprised to get a bonus at all.

Bonus = Something given or paid in addition to what is usual or expected (The American Heritage Dictionary)

Totally agree. It seems like some guys dont get that. Anyone that complains about their bonus after a year like this one really needs to pick up a newspaper once in a while.
And it seems like some guys are never satisfied no matter what you do. they are all about me me me. Ive had one boss that would dole out anywhere from 2-5 grand per man depending on time in. One boss took all of us to Atlantic City for a weekend with room paid, dinner paid and 500 bucks to gamble with. But ive also worked for guys that would give us a turkey and a few days pay or new tools and i was just as appreciative. If I make a nice wage the bonus is just "bonus" to my yearly salary. And I wouldnt count on it every year. I know some guys that would wait untill after christmass to quit or leave the company so they wouldnt miss out on their money.

I totally agree! I have found that no matter what you do for some people, some people will never be satisfied. I try to do little things like take my guys to lunch once a week. Save all my scrap and use that for bonus.

One outfit i worked for gave foremen $300, journeymen $200, Apprentices $100 acroos the board and they had about 200 working for them. One of my journeymen handed the $200 back to me and said "they need it more than me"--so i pinned it on the bullitin board in the jobsite office hoping the guy would change his mind and take it?? after about two weeks someone took the money---and he had a fit and quit?????????????????????

And? At least he has a job.
If I had any employees to give bonuses to I would rather give them nothing than a $10 bill. That would be an insult IMHO. It would be the same difference as giving them a nickel.

I would rather honestly receive no bonus than a ten dollar bill. It would make me deep down wonder if the boss was trying to insult me.

It's never been a point of why I went to work for someone and I never
have negotiated anything like a year end or even a production bonus.

I've received food credit cards twice, both given by the client, not the
employer, and have been to two different employer company party's.

I frankly don't worry about it, and don't shame anyone for anything that frankly doesn't exist in my world!

I use to get turkey's at UPS, that's was cool, knowing a trailor full of turkey's was just opened!

Another Christmas bonus story:
I was working as a JW on a new Howard Johnson's resturant years ago and the owner came around and wished everyone a Merry Christmas (back then they were allowed to say this:grin:) and he gave each guy an envelope. The foreman was a very religious guy but into everyone's business!! I was pulling wire as the owner came by and shook his hand and put the envelope in my shirt pocket and went back to work. As soon the boss left, the foreman came back to me and asked "HOW MUCH DID YOU GET?" -- i was still pulling wire and told him i didn't know ! He returned less than five minutes and asked again??? Well, i thought i'd teach him a lesson!!! I carefully opened the envelope and found a nice card with a hundred dollar bill in it, and was greatful! I had four crisp $100. dollar bills in my wallet to buy something for Christmas and i carefully slide them into the card and put the card back into my shirt pocket. Breaktime came and he mentioned in front of the other men "you better open that envelope-there's money in it and your gonna loose it!"! Well, i ignored him and a few minutes later he came over and snatched the envelope from my pocket and opened it--as he pulled the card out to show me the money---the "now" Five crisp one hundred dollar bills fell to the floor!!! His eyes were as big as saucers!!! By noon time i could tell he was shattered ! Before the end of the day i had to tell him the truth because i was afraid he was gonna quit his job !!!

To me bonuses are no one else's business except the company owner (or whoever his representative in charge of you happens to be) and you. It's a nice way to say thanks in business, with additional thanks (money, one of the most important tools in anyone's toolbox of life) emphasized.

Not eveyplace makes enough to be able to offer a bonus other than having a job at the time (not every job turns a profit). When things are really good, look forward to a bonus (or top employees will gravitate to where it is best).

If you get a bonus, don't be telling anyone what yours happened to be!:)

Every year my employer takes our crew to Chinese buffetand we do a yankee swap back at the shop. We don't get paid holidays or bennies so the little bones we get thrown are usually appreciated (by mostly everyone). We also get handed out a cheapo tape measure and 6-1 driver....I honestly would rather not get anything because if your on a construction crew and already don't have a tape measure or screwdriver, you shouldn't be there...I just run back to the store and return them for the $10 store credit. I am just happy to be fortunate enough to be working. Getting paid to stuff my face ain't so bad.

we have a nice christmas party and get a pretty nice bonus based on profits that year. but that is not the norm for most shops around here.

ive worked with guys that act like the company owes them a bonus or benifits or a job for that matter. all those things are nice but i dont feel like you should expect it.
