I've read every response listed in this thread to this heated question. As with most behaviors when dealing with human personalities, there is an abundance of abuse on both ends. There's an old proverb that states, GREED BRINGS OUT THE WORST IN ALL OF US. That being said, I am amazed at the sense of entitlement of the negative responses to this question. A "bonus" is defined as "reward for work ABOVE & BEYOND WHAT IS REQUIRED". Any response containing the words, "I deserve", does not understand this concept. Getting a job done early, intrinsically, does not "entitle" one to a "bonus". Only when, over a substantial period of time, when the net result yields a pattern of increased profitability, does the term "bonus" bear consideration.
Contrary to what most of you would think, no, I'm not an EC, GC, or any other kind of boss. I'm just a guy in our business for 35 years +, who learned long ago, that, that which is not expected, cannot be disappointing.
