Hi,

I am getting a series of pressure sensors UL recognized, Class I Div 2.

UL told me they want to see the installation instructions.

So I included "Wiring must be in accordance with the Class 1 Division 2 wiring methods [Article 501.10(B) of the National Electrical Code NFPA 70] and in accordance with the authority having jurisdiction. "

Great - but UL said this is not enough information. The problem is our product has a variety of electrical connections, but does not include a conduit connection. So clearly you cannot run a conduit direct into the part, you need to install it into a box or some other acceptable method.

So I said that as long as the installer follows the NEC it will be OK, since no one could run a conduit straight into a part that doesn't have a conduit connection.

Well that isn't acceptable to UL, but they can't tell me what instructions I should give. They want me to list methods or sections from the NEC.

So I'd like to know what instructions you think I should give, and is there anything else that as an installer you would like to see on the instructions?

Thanks

I wonder....if you meet 501.15(F)(3) dual seal, then it would seem that a standard cable gland connection would be appropriate....if your cable is suitable for D2.

I can understand UL's position on this. The typical installer would not put it in a box...they would just run an open cable. I would just send it back and get one that is suitable for how I install things...that would mean it would have to have conduit threads.

I also only purchase sensors with conduit connections.

It seems UL might want you to specify in your instructions exactly how an installer is supposed to install your sensor so that they can be sure that their installation follows one of the approved methods for the rating of your device. Since you know what connection methods you offer, you can certainly show how to use them for a Div 2 rating.

Does anyone know if this is what UL is looking for?

Most, if not all, of the devices I use in my Class 1, Div 1&2 areas have FM or CSA "approval drawings" which show details of exactly how to install the device so that it meets the ratings approvals. Does UL require the same?

I found a 13 watt bathroom flourescent fixture at IKEA with instructions that said you had to use 105C wire. Didn't buy it.
I asked UL how this low wattage thing could ever need this hi-temp wire. They said 105C is only for commercial use and I should go back to IKEA and research it. On my dime.
