Things would probably be alot easier if the trade was not dumbed down to the point where we need a book to walk us through every little thing because are too stupid to make a decision based on common sense, right Roger.
I fail to see where following a set of rules, whether we agree with the rules or not, has any bearing on my smarts, but if you feel rules, codes, and laws insult your intelligence then why not try to change them in the proper way?

Boy would I love to spend some time with some of you guys out in the field.[/quote]

And myself.

So....

Electric coffee maker gets set on 'table' but alas, there is no where to plug the thing in. HO grabs extension cord and plugs pot into receptacle that makes it so the cord drapes across the walkway. Toddler in walker happens by and grabs cord, pulling boiling hot coffee down on him or her.

Who is gonna pay when a slick attorney gets informed that compliance to the NEC would have prevented the incident and said attorney finds out who *knew* the installation was out of compliance and built it anyway?

The rules in the NEC are there for a reason. BTW, my sister, age two at the time, was burned by hot coffee in such a manner in 1962 and still has scars from her feet to her waist to prove it.

It is a stupid rule but a rule none the less. However there is nothing wrong with avoiding it with technicalities (such as temp not installing it or calling it a table IMO).

Bob, the overwhelming majority of Island receptacles are in the side of the cabinet the cords drape,.. just like the one In this photo . Not sure it would have made a differance had an Island outlet been available.

That, to a toddler,.. is an attractive nuisance ,..

That had better be a tamper resistant receptacle ,..like it will matter after that 15 pound mixer,.... which he has no idea how close to the edge it is ,..hits the little beggar in the squash.

I expect to see alot of proposals to remove this requirement or make it optional, good luck

18" of 'attractive cord' located entirely off the floor is without a doubt safer then 10' of extension cord dropping from a wall or counter receptacle, running across the floor and up to that appliance.

People will need power at the island no matter what they tell us.

BTW, lets keep this going, I have 6 more hours of sitting in my van collecting double time babysitting a generator and I need some entertainment.

Tell it to Ronald and Martha

Jim, which side are you on today?

I simply am going by facts
1. nec requires this stinkin receptacle
2 the inspector must enforce nec
3 the EC is not off the hook just cause it passed without
4 a kid could get hurt just as easy with it as without
5 i wish this was america but at times not sure
6 Bob says you need it LOL
7 lawyers can and will go after you (and charge a fuel sir charge)
8 just put the dang thing in.

Not taking sides as both have value and is no good answer.Cover yourself in what ever you pick.If my boss says leave it out then thats what i do.When i am the boss then live with what i picked.

i can't believe you guys are trying to justify not installing the REQUIRED receptacle because the homeowner does not want it, so if that homeowner sells the house in a year, the next owner does not deserve a code compliant house

from the ROP I posted
In addition, a toddler just
learning to walk could grab hold of the cord, lose their balance, and pull the
appliance down on top of them. This in fact did happen in our old home.

So again I ask how does that accident make running an extension cord safer?

It does not.

Speaking for myself, I would use the appliance wherever there happened to be a receptacle which would be on the counter instead of the island.

Lets also stop putting in outdoor receptacles as I personally never use the one at my house.

It is nuts to think a HO is not ever going to want to use appliances on kitchen islands.

electricmanscott

you would have to use the countertop receptacle, because you did not install a island receptacle
