It was common practice around here to just twist the ground wires of romex together inside boxes and not use a wire nut to secure them.

It was common practice around here to just twist the ground wires of romex together inside boxes and not use a wire nut to secure them.

Is there any place where this was not common for some time?

To be truthful it was pretty effective if they were twisted tightly and for at least couple of inches or more. They are also a pain to take apart if the need arises.
