color coded nuetral as hot at the end of a circuit no longer allowed

Code states that a color coded nuetral as hot at the end of a outlet circuit is no longer allowed, a red and black must be used.
This requires a 3 wire cable with red as hot and the neutral capped.
In this case the outlet prior to the outlet at the end of the circuit, would have two wires coming in and three wires going out, would code allow the 3 wire cable red and white to be pigtailed before traveling to the end of the circuit?
