We dont do a lot of commercial garage work so bear wtih me.We are wiring a car dealership that has a service workshop where they will be performing major repair as noted in 511.2.Looking @ 511.3 (c)(1) ventilation not provided-&511.3(c)(2) ventilation not provided-My question is,- do we need to install conduit seals when entering non-explosion proof equipment?ex:we want to install a 4" panel feeder undergrd. from the main elec.room to a panel in the service workshop area.(note:the panel already went thru the submittal process and was approved as a standard nema -1 tub)
And if we do need to install conduit seals they should be within the 18" as mentioned in 511.3 floor areas? As I mentioned we do not do alot of this work, and we want to do the correct installs, any help would be appreciated, thanks

jflynn,

Seals are not required for conduits that pass unbroken through the class 1

location. NEC2005 501.15(A)(4) ex.1

I hope that 4" coupling is below grade.

OK,This starting to make sense,so as long as we do not have a fitting in the zone we do not need seals, and we must locate any fitting out of the zone not less than 12" beyond each boundary, and we should be compliant....?
The coupling would be below grade...

jflynn,

That's the way I see it, just a side note: Watch out for your panel hieghts,

if you have 60" or taller tubs it can get funky real quick.
