I know that this has been discussed before but I couldn't find it doing a search.

Is this legal?

The panel in the picture is supplying washing machines on each side.

I don't think I've ever seen a panel mounted in that direction before- it took a minute to figure out what I was looking at!

Interesting... 240.33???

Well, it doesn't have the required dedicated space or the required working space... (110.26)

Based on only those findings, I'd say no. Anyone else?

This might quite possibly be the first picture post that has left me speechless (except for that speech).

And while you're looking at it, let's talk about 240.33. I'd never read it before tonight, but this is what it says, I'm paraphrasing--

Enclosures for overcurrent devices **SHALL** be mounted in the vertical position, unless that's just too hard to do. One more thing, you can mount them horizontally where the breaker meets 240.81, which essentially says that it needs to be "up" for "on" UNLESS it actually says "ON" on the breaker itself, which we know they all do. So just mount it whichever way you want to.

Seriously, this code looks like a waste of paper IMHO. Am I reading it wrong?!

Boy, you aren't kidding. At first I thought it was a pic from the floor looking upward....

I can just see someone taking soaking clothes out of the washers and laying them on that table in the middle, only to have the garments spread out on to the panel surface and, well, need I go on?

Please tell me a licensed EC did this.

Oh merde !!! it took me a min to figure it out as well kinda woke me up a bit.

IMO i just dont like that arrangement for obovis reason from time to time those commercal washer they are very hard on just about everything you can dish out.

what if the water hose decided to burst and spray water and get water in breaker box how the heck ya get this clean up without get zonked.

but let me add this IMO this is not a " dry " location more likey damp location and dont be suprise to find tons of moisture there.

but other hand speaking of breaker box i just dont like it at all unless someone dont want to run large numbers of wire from the washer to the other location.

Merci, Marc

Is that plumbing pipe entering the panel?
That white PVC could be a drain for all that moisture people are worried about... :D

Best case scenario it's an abbreviated vent stack (air admittance valve)

What perplexes me more is the conduit coming from the bottom-left of the panel. I'm not certain, but it looks like cabtire comes out the bottom, looping under that P-trap and back up to that ratsnest.

Quiz time: How many unbalanced wash cycles would it take for the rough edge of EMT to cut through the jacket?

I've worked in a few laundromats, and they all seem to be done this way. The panels are normall covered by the removable white counter sections.

Well, the handles are up when the breakers are on.

why not just mount the panel on the end of that thing behind a locking door? How is the panel accessable with the countertop on top of it?

They did just what you proposed as far as side mounting. You have to go to their web site and you will see that they have a table with the configuration that you propose. These tables are ugly electrical craftsmanship for many reasons... work space, accessability for maintanence, potential leaking water hazards... etc.

Yeah, it's kind of amazing this is UL approved.

This is not exactly the same thing but I started to hook up a new vent hood in a restaurant ( pre-wired ) and I noticed that every wire used in the prewire was green. The switch leg for lights and vent motor all green.
