I wasn't trying to recommend any but just show there are many kinds. I have used the bottom ones many times and have had no problem with them.

My opinion is that beam clamps are not designed to be used that way.

And I would have to agree, I missed this post.

I also do not like where someone uses a beam clamp with the open face of the "C" is facing up, I have seen to many of them fail like this, just a little too loose and one falls pulling the next one down until all the pipe in laying on the ground/floor

Gentlemen Before we say it is wrong we really need to see the clamp.

You can get pipe clamps that are designed to be used in the way described, some even look just like a 'C-Clamp'

For some examples click the link below.

For what it is worth they sell clamps for doing exactly what you describe.

Here are a couple of examples

Are you sure it was a beam clamp?

Could it have been a Korn Clamp??

exactly. i don't physically see how a normal beam clamp
would have the throat to fit around the flange and the
conduit, unless it was a ginormous clamp.

but a korn clamp is made of malleable iron for exactly
this purpose, and comes in a variety of styles, and
sounds like what was being described.

Ok, now I have to go back and take a pic. It's kind of on the way home( about 20 minute detour) but I want everyone to see this. Maybe tonight or tomorrow. THanks.
