Re: cooktop / oven

Chris the answer is staring you in the face, open your mind and accept it.

The code does not require unused conductors to be run.

The people responding to this thread are inspectors, instructors, long time electricians and even a member of a NEC Code Making Panel.

No one has come forward to back your interpretation, when that happens to me I open my mind and learn something new.

See Ya

I'm an inspector and an instructor, and I'll be the first to tell you that you are wrong.

And since you're prone to throwing out insults, I hope your not really installing things...it seems obvious to me that you are not willing to listen to reason.

I found out a long time ago that I was right and the whole rest of the world was wrong that I probably needed to change my thinking. I think that time is knocking on your door.

I'm not trying to be slanderous, but really, look at some of the people you are arguing with. I like to think that I have a pretty good grasp of the NEC and it's application, but if the same people were arguing against me that are arguing against you....well, I'd reconsider my point of view.

I was going to stay out of this until you said this "I hope you're not an inspector", but once you start throwing around insults, you are free game as well.

You're wrong Chris...get over it!

Chris...The guy's that you are disagreeing with, write, suggest code changes to the board, sit on the board and interpret the N.E.C.
These men are "Big Players" in this game. I have listened and learned volumes from them. :D

Re: cooktop / oven

To set things straight I was first with the "I hope your not an inspector" comment. Meaning that this kind of argument, insisting on requiring something that actually is not required, citing other sources that are completely unenforceable, and failing to admit someone else may be correct, makes for an inspector that lacks credibility in my view. What he meant by saying it back I don't know.
I'm out.. again!

Re: cooktop / oven

Chris,
Can anyone insisting a neutral isn't necessary on a new installation provide an excerpt from something supporting their arguments?
Nothing in the sections that you have cited, require that you install a branch circuit with a grounded conductor if the equipment being installed does not require a grounded conductor for its operation. I agree that most types of electric cooking equipment require the use of a grounded conductor, but not all do. If the equipment doesn't need it, the code does not require it.
