We completed a service upgrade today on a reception hall. Most of the circuits were not labeled, and in the course of identifying circuits, we found the fountain pump was fed from this service (property has multiple services).

Upon inspection of the fountain wiring I found this .....

We did not re-connect this circuit.

What you see is UF coming through the shell into a metallic LB, then EMT along the wall to a PVC junction box. The water level has leaked down to the hole the UF is coming through.

I’ve been reading through 680 for an answer on this.

My thoughts right now are to pull up some pavers to get the UF out and install it into a deck box. I think then we could run GRC out of this box back into the shell and thread on an underwater junction box (also patching the hole around the conduit). The pump cord would then go into the underwater junction box.

The deck box would be non-metallic; bonding bushing on the GRC.

Anything about this seem out of compliance?

for what it's worth.......... not to redesign, but what about pvc back to the bush area angled up like a pool (depending where that uf is coming from) and extend the chord of the pump to out of the fountain.???

Art 680 limits you to 10’ of exposed cord on a fountain pump.

I know it would end up in conduit but just as a sleeve in that scenario.

We ( I ) need a Mike Holt cartoon. I see 680.51 (E) "exposed cord IN the fountain", .... what about outside the fountain..? I also see fountain pumps on line with 20' cords..

I've only hooked up a little stupid fountain, but how would one wire a large fountain if they were only allowed a 10' cord? I see these VERY LARGE fountains with plumes coming up from the center ?

How would that pump be wired ?

Just wanted to add as now I'm curious. Just past the local college. There's a pond with two pumps in the center. Gotta be at least 70 to 100' to the dry land. ????

Looks like 682 (for bodies of water) has no cord length specified.. still wondering about large fountains though ??
Not to over generalize, but I have seen urban fountains where the pump is located in an adjacent building or vault, with only pipes running into the fountain shell.
