Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

1. I have a counter top with a built in garage at the end of the counter without an outlet installed in the garage. THe garage is 30" long and 12" deep with the next available outlet 28" from the edge of the garage and nothing at one end. Is this a code violation?
2. The counter space in front of the garage is 13" deep by 30" (the width of the garage) I therefore have a counterspace of nearly 60" without an outlet. Is this a code violation?

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

is the INSIDE of the garage a storage space, like shelves, or counter top space?

and i cant help but say it.... you gonna shoot me, but how do you get your car onto the kitchen counter :p

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

There should be a receptacle with-in the first 24 inches of the appliance garage. One is not required for the inside.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

12 inches or more in front of the garage is considered counter top. Max. 24 inches from ends of top, stove or sink then every 4 foot along length of top.If a stove or sink have min. 12 inches of counter top behind them then that area is also considered part of the length. So anyplace along top you can plug in a 2 foot cord.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

i looked and could not find the definition for how deep a counter needs to be to be considered a counter.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

As i am sure you know you could tag him about the 28 inches being 4 over. But this garage does seperate the counter space the same as the 2 inches in front of the sink. It's rather a gray area that i would judge based on how much other counter space is available. In short do you feel that space will actually be used ?As for the garage having or not having an outlet makes no differance as it is not allowed to be counted.Guess this is one of them times you earn your pay and yes it is a hard call.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

See garages in 210.52 C 5 (2005 NEC)SHALL not be considered required outlets . Also Fig 210.52

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

that is why i was wondering if it had shelves in it or just counter.... basicly, is it just storage, or useable countertop.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

110.12

This below is not in the code:

12 inches or more in front of the garage is considered counter top.
This is:
(1) Wall Counter Spaces. A receptacle outlet shall be installed at each wall counter space that is 300 mm (12 in.) or wider.
The 12" behind a sink or range is correct.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

ok... so then since the code says 12 or wider, and doesnt say any minimum deepth. the 13 inches infront of the garage would be counter top. therefore require outlets.

since the code says that if cabinets are in the way the outlet can be placed in the cabinet under that countertop.. that is where they should go.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

210.52(c)5 to me means that a otlet in a garage can not be used to count for the required outlets. not that a garage has to have a outlet. fig 210.52 has nothing to do with a applaince garage.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

When ART 100 fails-12in 6in 8in??? WEBSTERS- COUNTER: a flat level surface for serving food.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

one could say that a garage or other cabnet on the counter top (with 12" of counter in front)is not wall space as outlined in 210.52(C)1 (Wall space vs cabnet space) Butt lets say I'm wrong 210.52(c)5 says that the outlets in the garage don't count so you would have to install outlets out side of the applance garage. on the cabnet fronts or above the garage door.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

It doesn't tell you how deep a counter top has to be to be considered a counter top.

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

So what do you think shoud the 30" garage have a outle in front of it or not yes or no I say no

Re: Counter Top Outlets in Kitchens

the 13 inch counter in front of the garage would be the countertop in question. sounds big enough to be use as such to me.

especailly when using one of those appliance stored in the garage.

[QUORE] 2005 cycle of the NEC
210.52(C) (5) Receptacle Outlet Location. Receptacle outlets shall be located above, but not more than 500 mm (20 in.) above, the countertop. Receptacle outlets rendered not readily accessible by appliances fastened in place, appliance garages, sinks, or rangetops as covered in 210.52(C)(1), Exception, or appliances occupying dedicated space shall not be considered as these required outlets.
The appliance garage breaks the countertop. A new countertop is started on either side of the appliance garage and that space in front of the appliance garage belongs to the appliance garage and is not countertop.
