Are there any exceptions that would not require a disconnect. This is one that control box is inside and 1 hp 3 phase 208 motor is outside and would not be in site.

Did U look at this ?

Did U look at this ?

404.14 Rating and Use of snap switches pushes over to

430.83 ratings, note the various conditions

430.83(c) Stainonary motors of 2 Horsepower or Less

(c) If you can get a Switch rate 2x the service, I beleive you can use that. I'd be sure to use a 4 11/16 box with raised cover for that 3 pole puppy :)

It will be hard wired.I suggested a 3 pole switch that i could put in the bell box that is needed anyways. My project manager priced them and thinks its cheaper to install a 3r disconect.Motor is only 1 hp pulls about 3.5 amps.Problem is i am running low on space with all the other outlets needed for refrigerated trucks.Any idea as to cost of a 3r disc verses the switch.

If the disconnect for the controller inside is lockable, why could'nt you use that.

(B) Motor A disconnecting means shall be located in sight from the motor location and the driven machinery location.

Exception: The disconnecting means shall not be required to be in sight from the motor and the driven machinery location under either condition (a) or (b), provided the disconnecting means required in accordance with 430.102(A) is individually capable of being locked in the open position. The provision for locking or adding a lock to the disconnecting means shall be installed on or at the switch or circuit breaker used as the disconnecting means and shall remain in place with or without the lock installed.

Rick which condition would you use a or b?

Condition a) is used when it's imposable to do otherwise.

Condition b) supervised installations.

That is not what 430.102(B) Exception: (a) allows...IMO.
After reading all the fine print notes and examples,i would agree. How about we post a note on the door to keep open while servicing the motor:grin:

I wish it was that easy, but even if door was open you could not actually see the control box.You could see that nobody is in front of it.Its just another cost we must add to the bill.Does anyone make a simple pull out like we use on residential ?

Part of problem is the risk of a truck hitting it.

If a lockable disconnect would meet code i could put it inside

Jim,
Would a single pole switch that is in series with the 110 volt coil on the contactor be qualified as a disconnect ?
No, the disconnect must open the power conductors to the equipment. See 430.103.
