Brand name--- I would think P&S and Lutron would be all over them if it weren't the real thing. You can actually read the name Lutron on the ariadini dimmer.
I don't know. I bought a few cases (cases, in the tens of thousands of wirenuts) of Buchanan B-Cap wirenuts that turned out to be counterfeit. I emailed Ideal, and their response at the time made me believe they couldn't care less.

SunStar seems to have buyouts of brand name stuff from time to time, which seem pretty attractive. I'd rather rely on vendors that have what I need every day, instead of taking pot luck with a place like these boys in Florida.

Yeah, I notice that they sell T&B classified replacement breakers. I wonder if they aren't getting them out of Canada, without a UL mark? It's been a good many years that T&B stopped making panels and breakers for the US market, I believe.

I got a T&B breaker that was listed for use in an obsolete CH panel a couple years ago from a local supply house. Shephard Electric for those in MD.

One of my buddies bought what he thought was an "ALPINE" car stereo for short money. Upon closer inspection it was an "ALFINE" stereo.

I guess it could be just like it could be bogus at your supplier.

Very true.

I guess what would raise a red flag to me is if the brand name stuff is selling for a ridiculous low price.

I agree that some of the materials you buy on the internet are pure junk but we're all going to have to face reality real soon. If our economy heads for the tank (as some predict) and real estate prices keep dropping (as some predict) and housing starts go down we're all going to have to start sharpening our pencils.

Supply house prices
------------------
Juno 5" IC can-----$16.99 + Juno 5" std trim $17.48 + R-30 bulb $5.95 +Sales tax (7% NJ) $ 2.83 = $43.25

On line prices
-------------
Brand X 5" can-----$6.99 + Brand X std trim $3.99 + Brand X bulb $1.95 + $0.00 shipping + $0.00 sales tax = $12.93

While we all like the prestige of providing the highest quality products along with our services we'll soon be banging heads with those buying exclusively from on-line stores. It's probably not going to make a difference for installing only a few fixtures but when you have to install dozens in a new house the competition is going to be stiff.

Caveat emptor!

Caveat emptor!

I discovered Ebay. Sometimes Ill find things that I need at a really cheap price. Just gota remember to wear the Asbestos gloves. The number I got for Sunstar is 1 800 881 STAR ext 5295 they are out of Pompino FL.
They are fast, reliable, gota order over $800 (?) to pay for shipping. Not paying shipping is what makes the sale worth the time.
I get GFCI's from them sometimes. That's another story.

I don't know what suppliers you are using but those supply house prices you quoted are nowhere even close to a reasonable price at a professional trade supplier, at least in this neck of the woods. Heck, you can get the stuff at the box stores for less than that.

Not only that, most of the larger chain suppliers here will run a monthly can/trim/lamp special for a very good price.

i think we use those sunstar brand wirenuts at work. i really hate them actually and wish we would use ideal or bucanan at least.

has anyone ever installed those sunstar fixtures?

Peter,

This is exactly the point I was trying to make. I'm not sure if it's Juno who decides to make their the prices so high or the supply house. I picked the Juno 5" can because I recently had to buy some and had the pricing readily available. No one in my area stocks Halo 5" cans. And, we all know that 6" cans are the most commonly used and cost the least. The smaller the can the higher the price.

If I had to bid this job against someone who was buying from Sunstar I'd probably lose the job just based on material costs. We might as well open our eyes to this because it will be happening more and more as the economy moves toward depression or recession. There will be less and less money around and people who have money are going to be shopping the jobs more extensively and getting more than just 3 bids.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion. I think Ideal and Bucanan are very high quality manufacturers and their products superb. However, when you compare their price of say a 500/ct bag of yellow wire nuts at $40.00/bag to Sunstar's $12.00/bag, Sunstar starts to look real good especially when they run a "buy 3 bags - get one free" sales campaign. Frankly, I don't have a problem with the Sunstar wirenuts as others have mentioned. You twist them onto the splices, they bite down very well and don't come off. What other quality features would you expect from this connector ?
has anyone ever installed those sunstar fixtures?
I haven't myself but I know others who have. Their biggest complaint was that the trim turned yellow after a year or so. That, in and of itself, would be enough reason for me not to use the fixture.

BTW does anyone have any good web sites for getting a break on common item fittings halo cans ect..
The site in question has trims that fit halo. I use to buy the open trims for $2.99. That was years ago. Their regressed eyeballs are dirt cheap and I have had good sucess with them. They are the pressure fit style not the rabbit ear style-- or they use to be.
